NEW CHALLENGE! Example of environment portrait with a story by ©Valérie Jardin

This is Conrad. He was walking out of the garage of the famous First Avenue music club in Minneapolis. I went to him and said “Wow you must’ve seen a lot of famous artists over the years.” Being such an interesting character and a true Minnesotan, I asked to make a portrait of him. He wanted to pose by one of the stars on the building which is the one of his brother Billy who has a long time behind-the-scene fixture in Minneapolis. Sadly, Billy passed away at the age of 60. Conrad still works at the famous First Avenue. He is the stage manager today. He also has his silver star on wall, not too far from Prince’s gold star.

In this new Q&A segment, Valerie invites Doug Kaye to help answer a listener questions about their workflow, rate of keepers and workshop expectations. They announce the winners of the latest photo challenge and announce a new one.

Guest Co-Host Doug Kaye

Beginning his visual explorations in his father's wet darkroom, Doug earned a degree in theatrical lighting design at U.C. Berkeley in the '60s and studied cinematography at NYU's Graduate Institute of Film and Television in the '70s. In the '80s he began a two-decade hiatus from still photography, then got into digital in 2008. A trip to Kenya convinced him nature photography wasn't for him, and Iceland cured him of his interest in landscape. For the past four years, Doug has focused almost exclusively on street photography, including shooting film (even medium and large format) much of the time. Doug teaches photography locally in San Francisco and online. He leads street-photography workshops in Cuba, which he has visited eight times, and locally in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the co-host and producer of the CameraLabs Cafe gear-review podcast with Gordon Laing.

In this Episode…

This week, Valérie shares a conversation with NYC award-winning photographer, documentary film maker and teacher Bob Sacha. They discuss his experience filming BlindSight, a short documentary film that examines the photographic imagination of the members of the Seeing With Photography Collective in New York City and much more.

Bob’s Biography

Bob Sacha is a director, cinematographer, editor, teacher, photographer and, above all, a collaborator on visual journalism projects. He has created video for projects that have won the Pulitzer Prize, a National Emmy for New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming,  a Webby and the first gold medal ever given by the Society for News Design. He was the director of photography for the New York Times series, Living City, about  New York’s infrastructure. BlindSight, a documentary short about a group of blind photographers that he directed and shot, had its world premiere at DOCNYC, the country’s largest documentary festival.

He was recently named an Associate Professor for Video Storytelling at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York, where for four years straight he received the Tow Foundation Grant for “teachers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their fields.”  Known for his innovative approach to visual storytelling and his engaging teaching style,  he received one of  the initial Journalism360 Grants for Immersive Storytelling to bring  360 video journalism to community media organizations in the NYC area.

He has lectured and taught workshops and classes at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, SVA, the International Center of Photography’s New Media Narratives, CAMERA, the Italian Center for Photography and around the world for National Geographic Expeditions.

In the hazy past, he had a long career as a photojournalist, first for The Philadelphia Inquirer, magazines like LIFE and National Geographic, then he worked as an editor/producer at the multi-award winning MediaStorm. He is currently interested in looking deeper into 360 video and spatial audio and using his iPhone to capture the world around him every day.

Summary

Today my guest is photographer Fokko Muller and he shares his 'photo faves' with us, enjoy!

Biography

Fokko Muller - headshot.jpg

"I am a Dutch photographer with a special interest in street photography. Street photography changed my way of looking into the world. I like being on the streets, seeing the interaction between people and hearing the fragments of their conversations.

I enjoy showing people in their daily environment. I like you to take a closer look and wonder what is happening. Sometimes I want to make you smile. My photos are always made with respect for the subject.

I teach street photography workshops, I give lectures on street photography and I published my photo book The Street.

I am an official Olympus Visionary and owner of www.straatfotografie.nl

The best thing about street photography is that you walk out the door and never know what you bring home in your camera."
