In this Episode…

If you’ve been listening to Hit The Streets since the beginning, you may remember Jimmy who was my guest in Episode 44 titled Turning a Negative into a Positive.
After losing his job, Jimmy decided to start making a difference in his community by using his camera. Two years later he is now making a living with his photography and gives us an account of his journey.

Jimmy’s Biography

Jimmy started out as a street photographer/documentary photographer but due to circumstances he is now a full time freelance photographer.

He has transferred his passion and eye for street to commercial work such as events, weddings & various commissions.

His years working in construction have given him the knowledge to create images and document ongoing works for various construction companies around the UK.

In his short time as a photographer he has been heavily involved in the community where he has always lived in East London, this has unintentionally opened many doors and given him some great opportunities to work with great people, including the chance to mount 3 exhibitions.

One was a street photography exhibition which was visited by the legendary David Bailey and his most recent exhibition consists of images he has made while documenting a local care home mostly of people with dementia, he aims to show there is still a quality of life to be had even with this terrible disease, the images are displayed around the home to allow the relatives to see those brief smiles and moments that their loved ones still have at times.

He was on the street hunters list of street photographers to watch for 2017, he was also shortlisted down to the last 10 of 3000 for London Live news competition.

His goal for the future is to carry on with some large scale photography projects & combining his street style with his commercial work to give his images for clients a different feel.

Hendrik’s Biography

Born 1965 in Germany, I spent my childhood in Germany, Denmark and Portugal. I have lived in Düsseldorf since 1990.

The Rhineland way of seeing life in a friendly and relaxed way, of not taking yourself too seriously, has infected me and I also live it in my photography, which I discovered about 10 years ago. People, urban structures and light are my passion.

In this Episode…

Valérie shares a special conversation with NYC photographer Fran Kaufman about her ongoing photography project of documenting her daily life with her husband who is struggling with dementia.

Fran Kaufman.jpg

Fran’s Biography

More than 20 years ago, I retired from a long career at Children’s Television Workshop (Yes! I knew big Bird!) and picked up a camera. I’ve never looked back.  Since then, I combined my love of jazz music with my photography, and had a second career photographing musicians for magazines, record companies and for the pleasure of it.  I’m working on putting together a book of my jazz photos, with the title “Stolen Moments,” as my pleasure and specialty has been behind the scenes photos from rehearsals, sound checks, recording sessions.  I’m honored that the great, multi-Grammy-winning critic Dan Morgenstern has written an essay about my work to be included in the book. I’ve had numerous shows of this work in galleries and at two museums. I continue to be the photographer for a monthly jazz magazine that’s distributed in clubs around the country.

I thought I’d continue on this path forever.  But a few years ago, my personal life took a left turn when my husband began to show signs of dementia, just as the kids left home, the tuition loans were paid off and we thought life would be a picnic.

To my surprise, finding a way to deal with the feelings and the day-to-day reality of our situation has led to the current project, which has taken over my photographic life.   I’ve used this challenge as an opportunity to stretch my photographic muscles and venture sometimes into metaphoric territory.

This project, which certainly could also be called “Stolen Moments” is both a diary of domestic life and a hard look at how dementia robs not only the patient but also those who live with him.

Learn about the power of seeing the world in a new way and ditching the concept of perfection during this conversation with the creator of the Lensbaby creative lens system, Craig Strong.

20190123_2381.jpg

Craig’s Biography

Craig Strong is a photojournalist turned product designer who co-founded Lensbaby, Inc. in 2003.

Craig switched from film to digital in 2000 and found the freedom his DSLR gave him to create unlimited photographs exhilarating. A natural tinkerer who had always explored what's possible, he started putting odd glass in front of his first digital SLR and found imperfect lenses often conveyed what he saw better than perfect glass could.

Inspiration for the Original Lensbaby lens came from joining an old Speed Graphic lens with a short piece of Shop-Vac hose to shoot selective focus images not otherwise possible with his dSLR. Since 2003, Craig has led the design and production of many lenses and accessories that offer photographers selective focus, flare, swirl, sweet spot and a handful of other photographic effects not readily available using modern camera lenses

In this Episode…

This week on Hit The Streets Valérie invites Dutch flight attendant and passionate photographer Wendy de Boer to talk about her on going project 'Shoot With A Local' and so much more!

Wendy’s Biography

foto 2 .jpg

Wendy has a boarder-less passion for traveling as well as photography. Her profession offers her the ultimate chance to combine those two. As a stewardess, Wendy de Boer flies all over the world and she spends most of her time abroad. There she meets local photographers and does “photo team ups” with them.

The local photographer and Wendy ‘hit the streets’ with their camera for one or two days. Wendy’s aim is to connect with local people all around the world and share her passion with likeminded people. Together they learn more about photography, culture and life. She funded an interesting project named; “Shoot with a local” and  she documents those meetings in short videos. Over her shoulder you can have a look on how she teams up with these photographers, she shows his or her personality in relation to his or her photography style and she literally takes us with her on a journey to many different countries with the photo results included.

There is a message in her work; it’s about humanity and respect for other people and our environment. She connects, she inspires and and with her extreme high energy and enthusiasm she takes you to another world!

Many people have embraced her project “Shoot with a local” already. Photographers all over the world follow her on social media, support her, get inspired by her and are inviting her to do a photo team up with them as well.

Wendy is working hard to take her project to the “next” level. She hopes to be able to improve the quality of the recordings and produce more video and audio episodes. She is still looking for sponsors to fund the project and volunteers to help her build it while protecting “the soul” and “value” of this “Non Profit” initiative.

For more info, find her on social media, her website or on YouTube!
