In this Episode…

Valérie and guest co-host Bob Patterson answer listener questions:

@phillip_grondin: “How do you back up your files? External hard drive, cloud or both?”

@cdg_foto: “This is a question I’m sure will always be asked. How do you deal with photographing in public with everyone being so uptight about your intentions. I’m a male so maybe there’s a stigma with men publicly photographing people and situations. For instance I had a neighbor raise concern for photographing their Christmas decorations. I used to not care but it’s been in mind lately.”

Valérie and guest co-host Patrick La Roque answer listener questions:

@shawnbrezny: Do you have any recommendations for how you get into a “creative flow” when out shooting on the streets or anywhere else? Sometimes when I’m out it takes a while to realize what I’m seeing, interpreting or even feeling. Just looking for any tips or inspirations that have worked for you or others in the past.

@Frenchy_Val: Un photographe (français) dit que pour s'améliorer, il faut se mettre à la composition disant aussi qu'on ne cadre pas d'instinct. Des conseils pour s'améliorer ? (A photographer she follows says that the only way to improve is to study composition thoroughly, that one doesn’t frame by instinct. Tips?)

Summary

In this episode of HTS, Valerie invited Patrick Ludolph to cohost. Together they answer questions from Mark Farrington and Mic Warmington about personal style becoming an artistic straight jacket and the frustrations of your subjects on the streets always being occupied with their mobile phones. Patrick was a guest on a show a few weeks ago, here is the link to that episode.

Guest Co-Host Biography

Patrick L.jpg

Patrick Ludolph is a photographer from Hamburg, Germany with a focus on people, reportage, and travel photography. After studying computer science and working in online marketing, he decided to make his hobby a profession and started a business as a photographer in 2010.
Besides working as a photographer he writes the photography blog Neunzehn72, runs the Liveshow Fotoschnack, produces video tutorials and organizes workshops and photo travels.
He is also publisher of his own magazine named Hashtag Magazine. In 2017 he published his photo book SEAFARERS where he was documenting the life and work on container ships.

Q&A

Mark Farrington asks: “Many photography educators recommend developing a personal style, but doesn’t that risk becoming an artistic straightjacket?”

Mic Warmington in the UK asks: “bonjour valerie - I don't call myself a street photographer but a photographer who happens to be on the street occasionally - and I find myself being increasingly frustrated...and it's all to do with the ubiquity of the mobile phone, or cell phone as they call it in the states...you're looking for gesture, for human interactions and what do you get? The mobile - it's as though people cant do anything with their hands any more because they're permanently occupied!
un petit rant - excusez moi - but do you find the same?”

Summary

In this episode of Hit The Streets, Valerie is joined by Angelo Fernandes to answer listener questions.

Guest Co-host Biography

IMG_5904 - Version 3.jpeg

My name is Angelo and I am a street photographer, Fuji X shooter and proud owner of afshoot.com/shop, an online shop for premium camera straps and accessories.

My first contact with photography was back in 2009. I haven't stopped since then and my life made a 180-degree turn.

Before I really got into photography, I was a product manager and worked with a number of different suppliers, including leather and therefore have always had a love of beautifully crafted products. Having a passion for photography and all accessories, I wanted the perfect luxurious leather strap.  I started my own collection of straps and I’m the developer and designer of the MUFLON camera straps.

I also teach street photography locally in Lisbon.  These two activities allow me to live from photography and dedicate myself 100% to the street genre.

My passion for photography began in the streets, and nowadays the techniques that I developed in this environment is reflected in all my work. I always carry my camera with me. Taking photos every day gives me the necessary training and mental vision to see and capture the right moment.

Q&A

Christian Kocinski via email
"Hi Valerie: Do you ever go out shooting, and all the photos on the tiny screen look so great, you feel so inspired, and then when you get home it seems like there’s nothing but garbage?

I shot photos like a madman yesterday. I was at a summer festival trying to capture interesting people. When I looked through my photos at home they all looked out of focus or had distracting motion blur.

I’ve been shooting photos for years, but only started focusing on street photography in the last year. I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong, just don’t want to get discouraged either."

and

@photoankan via Instagram
"Hi Valerie: I like your pictures and love street photography. But I see that you and many others put pictures of children on Instagram. Do you ask for parents' permission?"

This week my guest co-host is Ugo Cei. We answer questions about ways to remain inconspicuous on the streets and focal lengths. We announce the winners of the last photo challenge and announce a new one and much, much more!

Guest co-host bio

Ugo Cei is a passionate professional travel photographer and an educator who helps photography enthusiasts sharpen their skills, so that they can take amazing pictures. He does this in various ways. First of all, by providing a wealth of free content on his website, articles, eBooks, and tutorials.

He designs and leads photography tours and workshops on location around the world, including Italy (Venice, Tuscany, Cinque Terre, Milan), Greece, Scotland, and Oman. His students and guest think he’s patient, knowledgeable and always willing to share what he knows.

He co-hosts and publishes a weekly podcast about travel photography, The Traveling Image Makers. Every week, they pick the brains of famous and not-so-famous travel photographers to learn what it means to travel for the love of photography and photograph for the love of travel. He loves to travel, having visited almost 50 countries, and to show the beauty of the world and its inhabitants to everybody. He thinks his is really an amazing planet we live on and every place and every culture possesses beauty that deserves to be shown.

Q&A

Do you have any tips to help yourself 'invisible' to shoot that candid moment? I live in a fairly small location so it isn't really possible to merge in to the crowd locally - thought you might have some tips for the unobtrusive use of the camera to assist. Betsy Dougherty
You use 23mm exclusively. Do you feel that focal length is preferable to 35mm for street work? I am considering trading the 35 for a 23. Then I think the 35 was relatively inexpensive and I should keep it for close-in portraiture and get the 23 as well. I value your opinion, especially since I don't generally collect lenses. Keep up the great podcasts and guests! Michael

And the winners are...
